Slavery in its contemporary guise is not always to recognise: a conference in London today reminds us that we may encounter the phenomenon in daily life without knowing it. The Trust Women conference, attended by campaigners from all over the world, is drawing attention to a disturbing global problem. As women’s rights advocate Monique Villa points out, modern slaves can work in nail bars or hotels. She suggests that the numbers held in effective bondage today worldwide is perhaps 30 million – an astonishing figure.
