🟢 Standing Up for Mental Health: Why I’m Proud to Wear the Green Ribbon

Every September, a quiet but powerful movement sweeps across Ireland—one that speaks volumes without saying a word. It’s the Green Ribbon Campaign, and this year, I’m proud to wear the ribbon and stand in solidarity with anyone facing mental health challenges.

đź’š What Is the Green Ribbon Campaign?

Organised by Shine, the Green Ribbon Campaign is Ireland’s largest and most visible initiative to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health. Now in its 16th year, the campaign encourages people to wear a green ribbon as a symbol of openness, compassion, and support for mental health conversations.

This year’s theme, “Step Up to Stamp Out Stigma,” is a call to action for all of us—to speak up, show support, and take meaningful steps toward a more understanding society.

🗣️ Why Talking Matters

Mental health affects us all. Whether directly or indirectly, we’ve all felt the weight of emotional struggles—yet too often, silence surrounds these experiences. Stigma can isolate people, discourage them from seeking help, and deepen their pain.

Wearing the green ribbon is a simple but powerful gesture. It says: “I’m open to talking. I’m here to listen. You’re not alone.”

🌍 How You Can Support

Supporting the Green Ribbon Campaign goes beyond wearing the ribbon. Here are a few ways to get involved:

  • Start a conversation: Ask someone how they’re really doing.
  • Host a Green Ribbon event: Coffee mornings, walks, or workplace talks are great ways to bring people together.
  • Share on social media: Use hashtags like #GreenRibbonIRL and #EndTheStigma to spread awareness.
  • Collect or order ribbons: Available at Primary Care Centres or online via Shine’s official campaign page.

👥 Community in Action

Across Ireland, local events are bringing people together—from wellness festivals in Swan Park to community-led initiatives in Wexford and Longford. These gatherings remind us that mental health is not just a personal issue—it’s a community one.

đź’¬ Final Thoughts

Wearing the green ribbon is more than a symbol—it’s a statement. It’s a promise to be kinder, to listen more deeply, and to help create a world where mental health is treated with the same openness and respect as physical health.

So this September, I wear my ribbon with pride. Not just for myself, but for every person who’s ever felt alone in their struggle. Let’s end the stigma—together.
