A week in to the fistula

It’s now a full week since the fistula was used for the first time. I can say with confidence that I am very happy that I am making the transition from hæmodialysis via permacath in my chest to hæmodialysis via fistula.

Usually the nurses use an anæsthetic spray on the arm to numb the skin before using a needle for dialysis. Yesterday, I decided to try without. After over ten years of blood being drawn for various tests due to the monitoring of my HIV, I think I am well used to needles going into my arm. It was a sharp prick but I think we will continue without the need for the spray. Of course, this may change when we make it to both needles going in.
