This evening, after a long and tiring week I settled down to chat to a few friends on Facebook, one of the many groups that I am a member flashed up as having a new post… knowing the group to be one where some good jokes are often posted, I hurried across…
AIDS WARNING
To all of you approaching 55 or have REACHED 55 and past, this E-mail is especially for you…
SENIOR CITIZENS ARE THE NATION’S LEADING CARRIERS OF AIDS!
HEARING AIDS
BAND AIDS
GARDENING AIDS
WALKING AIDS
MEDICAL AIDS
GOVERNMENT AIDS
MOST OF ALL,
MONETARY AID TO THEIR KIDS!
Not forgetting HIV (Hair is Vanishing)
And
AIDS : Acute income deficiency syndrome
I’m only sending this to my ‘old’ friends.
I love to see you smile.
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humour out of life,
And pass it on to other folk.
The above was a ‘joke’ that another member of a Facebook Group of which I am a member posted this evening – on World AIDS Day. My response is shown below. I don’t believe that I am being hysterical or being a drama queen in stating that this was insensitive. I wish that I could message the person concerned directly, but I can’t as I am not a friend of his… I hope he takes notice….
Forgive me for being not exactly amused at this post on World AIDS Day… As one living with HIV, it is not particularly amusing. I hope that everyone who has a laugh at this ‘joke’ also dips their hand into a pocket and contributes a donation to local charities to them working with people living with HIV. Anyone in Northern Ireland looking for someone to support, I’d recommend Positive Life –http://positivelifeni.com/ Thank you.
Just out of curiousity would you have seen this any differently if it was not World Aids Day as that seems to be part of your grievance with the post. Maybe it’s not of the best taste but it’s hardly the worst joke and not really taking a pop at anyone in particular (about from maybe old people). I and this is only my opinion don’t think it’s that bad there are plenty of so called jokes about a lot of things people may find inconsiderate or hurtful all the fat jokes come to mind only as I’ve recently been watching series 4 of Glee. As I’ve said already this is only my opinion and you’ll be glad to I’m quite happy to support all charities and do so on a regular basis maybe I should make and effort now to give to an Aids/HIV organisation and maybe to the elderly as well as good measure!!
It was made worse by being made on World AIDS Day. It was a bad joke to begin with.
